My name is Accalia. I was born in London to a British father and Polish mother. My father's work took him all over the world from India to Argentina. My mother was born in Germany to Polish parents just after the second world war. They relocated to the UK soon after.
My Polish heritage was a huge part of my life growing up, and years spent traveling the globe with my parents gave me a wanderlust and an intense need to explore the world as soon as I was able.
That's exactly what I did. I left the UK in 2005 with my then boyfriend, now husband Oliver. When he received the job offer, it took seconds to say 'Yeah let's go'. We moved to St Lucia in the Caribbean. I feel like that's when my life really began.
It's been the most enriching and enlightening journey, and I'm still learning.
Over the last two decades we have lived in St Lucia, the Cayman Islands, the Middle East and we now live in Spain. My job as a broadcast journalist and radio host has meant my listeners have been from all over the world, with us all sharing not only our many cultural differences, but our shared human experiences too.
My podcast project The People We Know, is an overpowering need in me to share stories of migration and the lives of third culture kids. There are many reasons that we and those before us, our grandparents and parents and so on, migrate. These stories are about real people and their journeys. Stories of courage and the bravery it takes to leave what we know, whether by choice or not and start afresh in an alien country. You will hear about the highs and lows, but mainly the pride we all have in those life journeys.
It's all part of what makes us who we are, and these are the stories of The People We Know. I hope you enjoy listening to these inspiring multicultural hereos.
